The clutch is the only component that transfers the engine’s power to the axles. Pulling extra weight, like towing a caravan or trailer, puts enormous strain on the clutch. Hills and slow starts, stop/start driving in queues are all tough on the clutch.
Clutch failure rarely happens without warning. If the car judders as you set off, if there’s a faint burning smell or if you use plenty of revs when pulling away, but don’t accelerate as you think you should; these are all indications that your clutch could be coming to the end of its life. If it does fail, it cannot be roadside repaired and your car will need towing to a garage.
Even though they’re pretty robust and reliable, clutch failure is still one of the top five causes of breakdown.
Breakdowns aren’t good. So if you experience any of the warning signs above, get in touch and we will be happy to arrange a check.
